England, 1910s. The Winslow family is on a crusade to clear their youngest son from theft charges which have gotten him expelled from the Naval Academy. They hire a young energetic lawyer to do the job. David Mamet successfully adapts Terrence Rattigan's play into his own cinematic style, creating a small but effective family drama, the minimalistic plot resting delicately on scraps of narrative information.
