Marching in the Dark

Belgium, Netherlands, India 2024 | 108 minutes | Marathi | Hebrew, English subtitles

Sanjivani is just one of thousands of widows of Indian farmers who were weighed down by heavy debts due to loans and took their own lives. The film follows the daily life of Sanjivani and her young children, who live with her in-laws. In a community support group, Sanjivani learns, together with other widows and through sharing and solidarity, to look for ways to break the cycle of despair and find paths of hope. Matching in the Dark is a delicate work that offers an aesthetic and emotional experience. With a Cinema Verita approach, director Kinshuk Surjan envelops the conflicts with whispers and silences, giving the events and characters their own pace and place, granting them power. The result is an intimate, perceptive, and tender documentary.
