Poor Things

Ireland, UK, USA, Hungary 2023 | 141 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

The pinnacle of Dr. Godwin's experiments in organ transplants and fusing gave birth to Bella Baxter - a woman-baby imprisoned in his Victorian London home. When Bella desires to discover the world, she leaves her creator, the doctor, and embarks on a journey of debauchery; where she explores the wonders of the body and feelings. It is difficult to summarize Yorgos Lanthimos' new film, which, like all his films, offers an exhilarating, if not so pleasant, experience. Here, with a colorful design and a circus kaleidoscope, he offers an ironic look at social structures, examines the definition of the human condition, and thanks to the tremendous performances - especially Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone, who rightly won an Oscar for her role - Lanthimos manages to successfully grasp the multitude of creative currents that break out in the film and present a singular venture.
