Who is the brutal murderer who leaves his necktie on the necks of his victims? The plot follows the tribulations of a divorced and lonely young man suspected of a chain of murders. The film revolves around four corpses: the first delivers information about the murders, a sort of introduction. The second determines the identity of the killer. The third provides the nerve center of the film, and the fourth is the one for which Hitchcock made the entire film. Hitchcock's penultimate film returned him to 1970s London, and is a perfect summation of his career: a brilliant combination of tension, macabre humor, and that moment when the smile turns to horror and leaves us in a breathless melancholy. Even 50 years on, this is a stunning work that should not be missed.
