An ex-convict and his blonde lover flee the girl's mother who forbids their relationship. The film follows the couple on the run in the deep American South. Filled with motifs from children's stories (primarily from The Wizard of Oz) and American culture (primarily Elvis), the film is a visually rich journey that won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1990.
