Merry Christmas (Joyeux Noel)

France, Germany, UK, Belgium, Romania 2005 | 116 minutes | French, German, English | Hebrew subtitles

December 1914. In the first winter of WWI, Palmer is an unwilling soldier for the Scottish army. Anna, an opera singer from Berlin, is brought to sing for the German troops at the front. French Lieutenant Audber has promised his soldiers that they will be home for Christmas. As Anna sings for the German troops, the acoustics of the battlefield carry her voice to the other side, into a musical dialogue with the Scots' bagpipe. The following day the commanders will declare a temporary ceasefire and the soldiers of the three armies will celebrate Christmas together... Christian Carion creates a sweeping yet intimate work in which nature plays a major role in shaping the atmosphere. The tension between the gloomy battlefield and the romanticism of the snowy holiday also add a dimension to this film whose final scene has repercussions for today's world.
