19th century Italy. The leader of a small revolutionary band is caught during an armed atack on a village and sentenced to life imprisonment. After 10 years of solitary confinement he is trasferred to Venice where he comes into contact with a new group of young revolutionaries. His disiilsionment causes him to drown himself. In their fifth film, the Taviani brothers continue the political theme that characterized their entire early creative period. They make effective use of the cinematic medium to express the various stages experienced by Giulio, utilizing a sophisticated soundtrack and colorful cinematography, while maintaining the calculated touch that defines their entire body of work.
