In Emir Kusturica’s first film, 16-year-old Dino, son of a Muslim-Marxist father in a poor suburb of Sarajevo in the early 1960s, meets a teenage prostitute named Dolly Bell and becomes a man. Kusturica presents a sensitive and entertaining picture of Serbian society before the civil war descended upon it.
