Two young men record letters depicting an imaginary journey to cheer up the spirits of their sick friend. The efforts bring the two men closer. Let Me Hear It Barefoot tenderly portrays a gay romance – not a common feat in Japanese cinema – and does so with quiet cinematic means: a camera that gives space to vistas and a measured script. The two’s adversities - the hesitations, social pressure, the feeling of abnormality - are conveyed beautifully. Let Me Hear It Barefoot is a sensitive and singular work that should not be missed.
