The exhibition is based on a book of the same name that introduces Kafka's life and work to anyone who wants to explore his world in greater detail. It brings to life the world of Prague's German-language literature, his interests, family, and friends, as well as the peculiar world of stories that continue to puzzle both readers and experts to this day. The text is written by Radek Malý, a two-time winner of the Magnesia Litera Award, poet, translator, and Germanist. The illustrations are by Renáta Fučíková, a leading Czech illustrator and recipient of numerous domestic and international awards.
Kafka's life, his family, his relationships with women, and, most importantly, his approach to literary creation are presented in an accessible yet engaging manner. One of the main aims of the exhibition is to present Kafka as a person who was significantly shaped by the circumstances of his time, something often overlooked under the suggestive influence of reading and the myriad interpretations of his works.
Kafka is also presented in an unconventional light as an everyday person: a sportsman and a tourist. The exhibition spans the arc of history, reaching into the present day, when Kafka has often become a profitable commercial brand. Franz Kafka: The Man of His and Our Time not only recalls this possibly most famous Prague native, but also the rare cultural symbiosis that the coexistence of Czechs, Jews, and Germans in one city represented.
